If the old friends have slowly been dropping out of the picture like moving away or by being busy with work or a new family, etc and haven't been replaced by new ones then also friends are decreased.

Yeah very true it's not necessary that all friends remain the same. Some may drop out from contact or other reasons but staying still with it will lead to less friends. New friends must be made.
