How an optical mouse works

An optical mouse works by sending a red colored laser light from beneath its surface. Near the place of light emission, a photodetector is placed. When the mouse is moved, the laser reflected is different each time. The photodetector captures this reflected laser and the special algorithm installed in the circuitry of the mouse determines which direction the mouse was moved. The information is send to the computer for further processing. This mouse can best be used in a mouse pad or any other rough surface. Not smooth surface because the reflection will be less detectable and not too rough or this could damage the mouse surface.
