Fifty years on, Nepal still vying for an Olympic medal
Father of the modern Olympics, Pierre De Coubertin, had famously said, “Winning medals in the Olympic is not as important as participation.” Though his opinion might have come at the time when the world was hostile and wars were plenty, the Olympics at present is the most effective medium that has united the world through the passion of sports.
It seems Nepali sports authorities have taken Coubertin’s remarks quite literally; in the last 50 years Nepal have treated the Olympics as nothing more than a long holiday. To make matters worse, the sports officials have always outnumbered the athletes, from its maiden Olympic participation in 1964 Games in Tokyo to 2012 Olympiad now taking place in London.
