Morphology of Myiasis
Some species have evolved along what is hypothesized to be one particular evolutionary pathway from saprophages, through species that are facultatively parasitic (developing in the necrotic tissues of animal wounds), to parasites of healthy birds and mammals, including humans. The host location strategies of adult females of the parasitic species are closely related to the strategies used by carrion breeding species to locate dead bodies, both being based on a response to the odours of infection and tissue decay2.
