if.... movie

if.... is a 1968 British drama film produced and directed by Lindsay Anderson satirising English public school life. if.... won the Palme d'Or at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival. In 2004, the magazine Total Film named it the sixteenth greatest British film of all time. The Criterion Collection released the DVD on 19 June 2007.

'If...' is a fascinating and powerful film set in an oppressive and archaic public school. It is one of the most original and innovative of all British movies of the 60s.

Lindsay Anderson was very much a European film maker , whereas the likes of David Lean , Ridley Scott and Alan Parker make spectacular movies involving visuel scope Anderson`s movie are more about social commentary and subtext , so much so that the message often ends up taking over the entire film whose primary function should be to entertain the audience
