So outstanding is this athlete that he has continually faced allegations of taking performance-enhancing drugs by people unable to believe his talent is natural. This American survived testicular cancer, which metastasized to his brain and lungs, in 1996, and then won the Tour de France over a record-breaking seven consecutive years, from 1999 to 2005. He retired in 2005, but returned to racing this year for another crack at the Tour.
