The movie is about James Jones' autobiographical 1962 novel, focusing on the conflict at Guadalcanal during the second World War. It was directed by Terrence Malick in 1998.

Most painful of all is the voice-over which rams poetic but meaningless metaphors and platitudes down the audience's throats until they become grateful to be returned to the boredom.
