CUPS stands for Common Unix Printing System. It is a Web browser–based printer administration
environment. With this system, an OS X 10.2 workstation can print to a non-Postscript printer
(a DeskJet697c, for example) in color without the assistance of Server 2003’s Print Server for Macintosh.
It’s extremely convenient to set up, and it has a surprising number of non-Postscript print
drivers organized by manufacturer. The drivers are made to apply by model series, taking advantage
of the fact that there are few differences between printers in a single model line.
