Tetanus is an acute, often fatal disease caused by an exotoxin produced by Clostridium tetani. It is characterized by muscular rigidity which persists throughout illness punctuated by painful paroxysmal spasm of the voluntary muscles, especially the masseters (trismus or lock jaw), the facial muscles (risus sardonicus), muscles of the back and neck (opisthotonus), and those of the lower limbs and abdomen.
