what is online/viodeo gaming?
Children everywhere are online: to do homework, communicate with friends, play games, buy tickets, download music, and upload photos -- accessing data from tablets, computers, and mobile phones. But along this benefits of this easy access to information and education are dangers, both obvious and hidden. One challenging area for parents is monitoring their childrens' use of violent video games.
The gaming industry, to date, has largely been self-regulated. The Pan European Game Information, established in 2003 by the Interactive Software Federation of Europe, rates games on a number of criteria before they are put on sale. Due to the large volume of games available to be played online, the PEGI Online affiliate was launched in 2007 to further protect children.
PEGI rates a game's content in five categories, PEGI 3, 7, 12, 16, or 18, indicating the appropriate minimum age of the player. For example, PEGI 3 allow for cartoon violence (e.g. Tom & Jerry) assuming these are depicted completely as fantasy characters. No "bad" language or scary scenes or sounds are permitted, which are acceptable in a PEGI 7 rating.
There are eight categories of descriptors that explain the rating, including "bad" language, fear, and violence, and that the game can be played online with others. PEGI Online has put forth an online safety code that requires the capability for reporting and removal of inappropriate content. While a voluntary system, PEGI standards are now mandated in a number of European countries and have gained acceptance outside Europe. It is used in 31 European countries, as well as Canada and Israel. Other countries, including Australia, have created similar legally-mandated ratings systems.
